Few cars of the 1990s were as daring, distinctive, or downright unconventional as the Plymouth Prowler. Introduced as essentially a concept car brought to life, the Prowler was Chrysler’s modern interpretation of a traditional American hot rod. Its dramatically tapered body, exposed front suspension, cycle-style front fenders, staggered wheels, and low-slung two-seat roadster layout looked unlike anything else sitting in a new-car showroom. Underneath that retro-inspired shape was surprisingly advanced engineering, including extensive use of aluminum throughout the frame, body, and suspension.
This 1999 Plymouth Prowler is an extraordinary survivor showing just 2,834 miles. Finished in sinister Prowler Black over a black leather interior, the car presents much as it would have when it left the showroom nearly three decades ago. The black-on-black combination works exceptionally well with the Prowler's exaggerated proportions, while the brilliant chrome wheels provide just enough contrast. The staggered setup—with 17-inch wheels up front and massive 20-inch wheels at the rear—was another radical styling element when these cars were new.
Making this example even more unusual is its removable hardtop. Prowlers were designed and sold as roadsters with a folding soft top, making a hardtop-equipped example an uncommon sight and giving the car an entirely different profile with the roof installed. It adds a surprisingly sleek, almost coupe-like appearance while retaining the open-air experience that defines the Prowler when removed.
The 1999 model year also brought an important performance upgrade. Beneath the hood is the aluminum-block 3.5-liter High Output V6 producing 253 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, paired with Plymouth's four-speed AutoStick automatic transmission. The transmission itself is mounted at the rear of the car as a transaxle, helping distribute weight through the chassis. Contemporary testing put the improved 1999 Prowler at roughly 5.7–5.9 seconds from 0–60 mph—respectable performance from a car weighing less than 2,900 pounds.
What makes the Prowler special today, however, goes well beyond its specifications. This was a period when a major American manufacturer took an outrageous auto-show concept and actually put it into production with remarkably little compromise to the original design. It was a factory-built hot rod created at a time when retro styling was only beginning to take hold, and more than 25 years later there is still virtually nothing else on the road that looks like one.
With only 2,834 miles, this particular Prowler is about as close as one can get to stepping back into a Plymouth showroom in 1999. The exceptional mileage, desirable black-on-black presentation, chrome wheels, and unusual hardtop make it a standout example of one of Chrysler's most memorable design experiments. For the collector looking for a Prowler that has been preserved rather than simply maintained, this is a remarkable opportunity—a car that is, for all practical purposes, still nearly new 27 years later.
